We love to have the right gear for the job. Although we are optimistic and believe in a future where we don’t need to wear masks anymore in daily life, we would always need good respirators to work in dusty places, and face hazards of mother nature.

Sanding, sawing, painting, spraying, varnishing… These activities release a huge amount of particulate matter and toxic fumes that are inhaled and absorbed by the body, leading to many health issues. Ordinary masks are a hassle: they give you sores, they fog up your glasses or protective goggles, they are bulky and heavy, they dramatically reduce the air flow and, even worse, most don’t offer the necessary protection.

Maasc has great advantages for this types of work. The silicone seal prevents inward leakages. That means that all the air you are breathing actually goes through the filter. The dedicated exhaust valves, in addition to the seal, prevents glasses and goggles from fogging up. And the BreatheEase™ active fan system pulls air in, making breathing seamless, ideal for works that requires physical activity. Airflow system to enhance breathing

The patented BreatheEase™ fan system pulls air through a premium quality filter at a rate of 35L/min, constantly providing a supply of fresh filtered air. We propose you two speeds for when you are walking or practicing moderate exercise and for when you are working more intensively.

Maasc has a one-way airflow, which means the entrance and the end exhaustion of the air occurs separately.

1. Air is sucked through the gas filter (pre-filter) and particulates filter, eliminating particles and pollutant gases. The filtering surface is large to reduce the air resistance
2. Air passes through the fan and is inhaled to ease breathing
3. The fresh breeze of the airflow eliminates the nuisance of the exhaled air with excess heat and moisture and keeps expelling it out from the Maasc quickly through the exhaustion valve located on the bottom part. Even when the BreatheEase™ Fan is off the outlet valve safely closes when inhaling to allow you to inhale only filtered air.

High performance filtration

Maasc protects you from both small particles and toxic gases, with our double protection provided by the particulates and gas filters.

Additionally, the Activated-carbon gas filter (pre-filter) stops hazardous Sulphur Oxide and Nitrogen Oxide gases, as well as odours, something you usually only find in heavy-duty masks far beyond the price point.

Innovative high grade silicone airtight seal

The LFGB CE food-grade silicone seal avoids leakage of air both inwards and outwards, avoiding the infamous foggy glasses and the ingress of unfiltered air. And more: the soft silicone is cool to the touch and won’t mark your face. It seals surprisingly well even for the “beardy” gentlemen!

We use only premium LFGB European food grade, safe non-toxic silicone with no fillers, BPA, BPS, PVC, and other phthalates. This is the safest silicone in contact with your skin. Our seal, outlet flap valve, and neck strap are made of this high grade and safe silicone.

Integrated electronics enabling smart features

After 3 years of development, we were able to come up with a high-efficiency comfortable respirator capable of protecting you in situations we’re increasingly exposed to. Integrated computing power enables Maasc to control LED lights for communication with the wearer as well as for night visibility. After you set up the level of pollution of your area, Maasc’s software computes the actual number of hours of usage with the airflow speed and the weight of particles that settle on the filter. As your filter reaches the end of its life, Maasc sends you a smart alert, letting you know it’s time to replace the filter to keep your mask running optimally. The BreatheEase™ Fan, filter, and smart capability combined make Maasc a wearable air-purifier that’s much more superior to the disposable cloth mask which becomes a humid mess on your face within minutes of wearing it.

Part of the protection Maasc offers comes from its high-quality seal, which guarantees perfect fitting on the user’s face. To do so we developed a revolutionary airtight seal that fits perfectly well the various face shapes with a unique configuration when folded on your face. We used thousands of anthropometric data from the DINED database to patent our seal. Our LFGB CE food-grade silicone seal is very soft to the touch and easily adapts to your face. However we come in different shapes and sizes! And that’s why we designed three different sizes of seal to adapt to various facial dimensions.

The crisis might hopefully be over soon but discomfort from inefficient masks is still here! We tried lots of masks but none was addressing our needs. We are a dedicated team with decades of tech-industry experience and we worked intensively to innovate, patent, and build an industrial prototype.

Let’s start by the basic: Maasc is the most comfortable breathing mask for prolonged hours and daily usage! We do believe that above all, the breathing experience has to be the best for you to wear your gear for long hours and be happy to repeat the experience the next day…and the day after, else it is just a gadget!

We are currently running pre-certification tests to assess the indicators of safety and filtering efficiency. The results are promising! With your support, we want to certify Maasc for the top-level CE EN12942:1998 harmonized standard.

A constant challenge during the development of Maasc was the tough safety and environmental guidelines we followed to ensure the product is safe and ready to be used even in heavy-duty situations.

From day one, we have been serious about creating a Personal Protective Equipment company. Our mission is to deliver the safest, most comfortable and affordable powered respirator to enable mass adoption. The current top-grade respirators price point often forces people to use the less adapted solution to their needs, and we find that unacceptable. Comfort is not the first concern of masks manufacturers. With your comfort in mind, we have been developing Maasc for more than 3 years. We could have launched it last year during the “mask hype period” but we were just not ready.

Your safety is our “raison d’être”. After numerous iterations we developed the least bulky & lightweight powered respirator using flame resistant, sturdy, and soft-touch material. The material used is flame-resistant, which means it can even be momentarily exposed to direct fire with no risk of combustion. The silicone seal and straps are also resistant to high temperature and provide comfortable use, with equally distributed pressure through the soft seal. The seal itself was a big and worthy challenge, resulting in a really comfortable and sealed fit. Replaceable filters without plastic around account for part of the environmental concern. The embarked electronics enables smart capability to automatically alert you when to replace the filter based upon your environment and the usage of Maasc. The use of protected circuit Li-ion batteries against over charge, over discharge, short circuit and overheating and also replaceable was desirable since they are safer and easier to recycle. In compliance with the JEITA guideline (Japanese guideline for lithium batteries) the batteries charging mode is only allowed between 0°C and 45°C ambient temperature, again to increase your safety. All the fastenings are removable as to separate each individual part for correct disposal at the end of the product cycle. The hidden button avoids the use of cables inside the mask, making it safer and sturdier. The magnetic USB cable permits free movements without danger of being caught up.

Most of Powered Air Purifying Respirators are equipped with large units of filter | fan | batteries that are attached at your belt or in a backpack. Well this is good for industrial activities but not to go out for our everyday life.

Maasc is designed to solve that!

Environmental commitments

Long-lasting design

Maasc is made with highly durable materials. Its frames and buckles are made of sturdy and high-density flame-retardant ABS & PC. The seal and neckstraps are made of CE LFGB food-grade silicone. These materials can resist extreme temperature and are classified V-0 according to the UL94 standard. As such, they resist high temperatures without leaking toxic chemicals. Our product is also modular, which mean you can easily replace parts if you need, granting it a long-lasting life cycle. The undergoing certification process creates more durability tests that would help us better estimate the product life cycle of Maasc. Overall, our target is to provide a respirator with a life cycle of at least 5 years.

Reusability and recyclability

Maasc is reusable. You can replace the particulates filters and/or the gas filters without the need of any tool. We made sure there is no plastic rim around the filters, better for the environment. Also, the filtering media surface is optimized and you recycle less material compared to a disposable mask that needs about three times more filtering media to operate. As Maasc has a smart function to automatically alert you when your filter is clogged and needs to be replaced, you only recycle filters when it is required – no more, no less. We decided to equip Maasc with protected rechargeable Lithium-ion batteries only. They are the safest on the market and are easy to procure. It is also easy to replace and recycle them. No one want to recycle a device with Lithium batteries inside! All the fastenings designed for Maasc are removable as to separate each individual part for correct disposal at the end of the product life.

Our roadmap

Maasc was founded 3 years ago by José and Adel. We both worked for more than 20+ years in tech-industries. During our trips to Asia and Middle East we suffered firsthand from terrible air quality. We decided to take matters into our own hands, drawing on our expertise to develop a personal powered respirator that solves the issues found in existing products. Coming from the Smart Home and Security industry we first thought that adding smart features to masks would be the right thing to do. After years listening to people facing similar problems we came to the conclusion that our device is to be comfortable for prolonged hours and daily usage. Smart features are essential to improve the safety of the wearer.

Without a talented team we could not go that far. We are lucky to collaborate with a multidisciplinary, talented, and international team of engineers, designers, and business developers.

Maasc and its partners are constantly developing and improving the product. A recent development is an implementation, with the support of R&D MIT, of more efficient and miniaturized particles and dust sensors. EIT RawMaterials has also been instrumental in developing and implementing motion sensors aided by AI to detect and alert early signs of fatigue of the Maasc’s wearer (funded by the European Institute of Innovation and Technology, a body of the European Union for innovation). These developments are already being considered in the future developments of Maasc to enable it to be used in new environments and applications.
